Call for Entries in the Rochester Writers’ 2016 Winter Writing Contest

Categories:  Poetry, Holiday Memoir, Flash Fiction, First Page

Prizes:  1st Place: $50.00, 2nd Place: $25.00, 3rd Place: $10.00 (awards in each category). In addition, Best of Show will receive a complimentary pass to one Rochester Writers’ Events in 2016.

Entry:  Entry to contest will begin on November 1, 2015 (Details at Bottom of Page)

Deadline:  February 29, 2016

Eligibility Rules:  All work submitted must be original, previously unpublished, and it must be submitted online or by U.S. Mail by the deadline. Author retains all rights. Rochester Writers’ will not publish any submitted work but retains the right to publish the author’s name and title of work. Open to all writers. Anyone under the age of 18 must submit with written legal guardian approval. All submissions must be in English. Only the title, body of work, and category should be on the front of the page. If submitting by mail: Contact information must be on the back of page (name, address, email, phone, category and word count) of entry. If submitting electronically: Contact information must be on a separate page from the entry. All electronic entries must be in a Microsoft WORD DOC or in the text body of the email. Winners will be announced at the April 23, 2016 Rochester Writers’  Spring Conference. Prizes and Awards will be handed out at the event. Winners in attendance may read their work to the conference attendance at a specified time. Prizes and Awards will be mailed to the winners not in attendance of the spring event.

Description of Categories:

  • Margo LaGattuta Poetry Submission: 100 words or fewer, any style, one complete poem
  • Holiday Memoir Submission: 200-400 words, creative non-fiction, first person story, which takes place during the traditional winter holiday season (Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s).
  • Flash Fiction Submission: 300 words or fewer, one complete short story
  • First Page of Novel Submission:  250 words or fewer, the first page of a novel

Word Count: Limit is for the body of work only and does not count toward title of work

Category: Please indicate which category your entry is for (listed with the word count)

Entry Fee:  You may submit up to four works (any category) for $15.00. Enter additional work for $5.00 each. Once submitted, entry fees are non-refundable.

Submission will begin on November 1, 2015

By Mail:  Send payment (check or money order) made out to “Rochester Writers” and entries to Rochester Writers’ 2016 Winter Writing Contest, PO Box 81698, Rochester, MI 48308-1698 (see Rules above).

Judging: Each category will be judged with independent judges. Then the first place winners will go in front of a different panel of judges to pick the Best of Show.
